I’m Ciara Diaz, also known as @Ciara_DancingButterfly on Instagram, and I’m so excited to welcome you to the very first post on cdancemovement.com. This site has been a long time in the making, and it represents more than just a dance journey: it’s a celebration of resilience, creativity, and finding purpose through movement.

My story begins a little differently than most dancers. When I was born, I was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia. My hips were completely out of their sockets, and for the first two and a half years of my life, I was confined to a half-body cast. I couldn’t crawl, let alone walk or dance. Those early years were spent in what felt like a physical cocoon, and no one could have imagined what would come next.

But when the cast finally came off, something unexpected happened: I didn’t crawl like most toddlers. I walked. And not long after, I danced. It was as if my body had been waiting for the moment it could move freely. That first step wasn’t just a milestone, it was the beginning of a lifelong passion. Movement became my freedom, my expression, and eventually, my purpose.

That cast, once a limitation, became part of the story that shaped me. It was my cocoon, and dance became my wings.

Life in a Spica Cast 🦋

Most of my earliest memories were spent in what’s known as a Spica cast. Because it encased my body from the chest down, I couldn’t sit upright in a normal chair or crib. Even using a stroller required creativity. Instead, I spent most of my time nestled in a bean bag, which was the only thing soft enough to mold around the cast and keep me comfortable when I wasn’t being held. For those curious about how life worked in such a cast: it included a small access hole in the back where a real diaper could be carefully slid in. The outer diaper you see in baby photos was simply for posterity. It wasn’t easy, but that cocoon became the first step in my transformation.

Since then, dance has taken me places I never dreamed of, from local studios and national stages to meeting incredible artists and communities along the way. But more importantly, it’s allowed me to connect with others, inspire younger dancers, and turn challenges into opportunities to grow.

Under the loving guidance and medical care of Dr. Stephen Storer, a board‑certified pediatric orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in pediatric orthopedics and sports medicine at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, things began to shift With his support, and my parents by my side every step of the way, I began formal dance and gymnastics training at age four.

As muscles strengthened and technique sharpened through years of practice and determination, the evolution truly began. From conservatory and competition stages to aerial silks and pageantry, my journey blossomed. Today, as founder of C Dance Movement, I aim to empower others to express their own transformation—through dance, art, and motion.

🦋 Why “The Dancing Butterfly”?

Earning the title “Dancing Butterfly” has been more than a name, it’s a symbol. Like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis, my movement rose from a place of confinement and limitation to freedom, beauty, and definition. From the earliest moments of diagnosis through each therapeutic step, dance became my language, my liberation, my art.
